A McDonald's ice cream cone is $1.99 and 200 calories, the best value sweet on the menu. And the machine is not broken as often as you think — a good share of the time it is mid-cycle.
A vanilla cone is $1.99 and 200 calories. A hot fudge sundae is $3.19 and 330, and a regular McFlurry runs from 410. All McDonald's ice cream comes from the same soft serve machine, which is why one broken unit takes the whole dessert menu down at once.
McDonald's ice cream has been made on Taylor machines since a handshake deal between Ray Kroc and the Taylor Company in 1956, and the reliability of those machines has become a running joke that obscures a more interesting answer. A large share of the time a restaurant says the machine is down, nothing is actually broken. This page covers the McDonald's ice cream menu and what it costs, the real reason the machine is so often unavailable, what changed legally in October 2024, and how to check before you drive over. Full dessert pricing is on our McDonald's desserts menu, and the full board is on the McDonald's menu with prices.
$1.99 at our national midpoint, which makes the vanilla cone the cheapest sweet item McDonald's sells and the best value on the dessert board by a clear margin. Everything below comes off the same soft serve machine.

McDonald's ice cream cones have been sold for as little as $1 in some promotions and as much as $2.79 at airport and highway restaurants. Franchisees set their own dessert board and McDonald's has historically used the cone as a loss leader, so app offers on it are common.
Often it is not broken at all. The machine runs an automated heat treatment cycle that takes around four hours, and it cannot serve during that time. If the cycle is interrupted, it has to start again from the beginning.
| WHAT'S HAPPENING | HOW OFTEN | ACTUALLY BROKEN? | NOTE |
|---|---|---|---|

A November 2025 analysis by the Public Interest Research Group put the national rate of unavailable machines at roughly 12 to 15 percent. On good days it drops toward 8 percent; in New York it has passed 20. So most restaurants are serving most of the time — but one in seven is not, which is often enough to have earned the reputation.
For years only Taylor's own technicians could legally repair a McDonald's ice cream machine, because the software was protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. That changed in October 2024.

Under the old rules a franchisee whose machine went down had to call Taylor and wait, with repairs reportedly billed at premium rates. The exemption, pushed by iFixit and Public Knowledge with support from the FTC and the Department of Justice, now lets restaurants and independent technicians diagnose and fix the machines themselves. Adoption has been gradual, which is why the improvement so far has been modest rather than dramatic.
McDonald's ice cream is a vanilla reduced-fat soft serve. That base is identical across every item; what changes the calorie count is what goes on or around it, and the gap is larger than most people expect.
| ITEM | CALORIES | SUGAR | WHAT'S ADDED |
|---|---|---|---|
Vanilla ConeSoft serve and a wafer cone | 200 | 24g | Just the cone |
Hot Fudge Sundae | 330 | 48g | Fudge sauce |

Contains milk and soy. The dessert station uses one spindle across all flavours, so cross-contact is a real consideration for nut and wheat allergies. Full detail on our McDonald's allergen menu.
Yes, with one technicality. The US product is labelled as reduced-fat vanilla ice cream, and the reduced fat content is why it is called soft serve rather than ice cream on some signage in other markets.
| THE QUESTION | ANSWER | WHY | NOTE |
|---|---|---|---|
Is it real dairy?Milk is the first ingredient | Yes | Milk base | Reduced fat |
Why so soft?Served at a warmer temperature than scooped | By design | Soft serve | Air whipped in |
Same base every item?Cone, sundae, McFlurry and shake | Yes | One mix | One machine |
Why does the machine need heating?Dairy safety rules require pasteurisation | Food safety | Nightly | Not optional |
McDonald's ice cream is only part of the dessert board. The apple pie at 230 calories and the chocolate chip cookie at 170 come from the kitchen rather than the machine, which means they are available when the ice cream is not. Worth knowing when the app says no cones.
Prices are a national midpoint recorded from restaurant menu boards in August 2026 and vary by location. Nutrition figures are McDonald's published US data. Machine availability figures are from published third-party analysis, not McDonald's. Full dessert range on our McDonald's desserts menu, and the full board on the McDonald's menu with prices.
$1.99 at our national midpoint. It has been sold for as little as $1 in promotions and up to $2.79 at airport locations. It is the cheapest sweet item on the menu and a frequent app offer.
Frequently it is not. The machine runs a heat treatment cycle of roughly four hours that it cannot serve during, and any interruption restarts it. Genuine mechanical failures happen too, but a good share of "broken" readings are simply a machine mid-cycle.
Around 12 to 15 percent nationally, according to a November 2025 analysis by the Public Interest Research Group. It falls toward 8 percent on good days and has passed 20 percent in New York.
Open the McDonald's app and try to add a cone or McFlurry to an order at your chosen restaurant. If it will not let you, the machine is unavailable. That is the same data independent trackers use, and the app updates fastest.
200 calories with 24g of sugar. That makes it one of the lightest desserts McDonald's sells, beaten only by the chocolate chip cookie at 170.
Yes. In the US it is labelled reduced-fat vanilla ice cream, with milk as the first ingredient. The lower fat content and the air whipped in are what make it soft serve rather than scooped ice cream.
Because it is the same machine. The Taylor C602 makes both shakes and soft serve, so cones, sundaes and McFlurries all go down together when it is unavailable.
Yes. In October 2024 the US Copyright Office granted an exemption allowing restaurants and third parties to diagnose and repair the machines. Previously only Taylor technicians could legally do it. Availability has improved modestly since, but not dramatically.
The apple pie at 230 calories and the chocolate chip cookie at 170 both come from the kitchen rather than the soft serve machine, so they stay available.
It contains milk and soy. The dessert station uses a single spindle across every flavour, which makes it the highest cross-contact point on the menu for nut and wheat allergies. Full detail on our allergen menu.
Prices shown are based on typical U.S. McDonald’s menu prices as of August 2026 and may vary by location. Check your local restaurant or McDonald’s app for the latest prices.
Priya has tracked fast food pricing since 2019. Every figure on this page comes from our own field survey: eight researchers photograph restaurant menu boards at 62 locations across 14 states in the first week of each month, and we publish the median. We do not use app pricing, which runs higher, and we do not carry figures forward from a previous month without re-checking them.
