A Sausage McGriddle costs $4.49 and carries 430 calories. Here's every version priced, the full nutrition, and what the maple griddle cakes are actually made of.
A Sausage McGriddle is $4.49 and 430 calories. The Bacon, Egg & Cheese version is also 430 calories, and the Sausage, Egg & Cheese is 550. All three sit between two maple-flavoured griddle cakes that contain no actual maple syrup.
The McGriddle is the only sandwich on the McDonald's breakfast menu built on griddle cakes rather than bread, and the sweet-savoury combination is why people either love it or avoid it entirely. This page covers what each version costs, the full nutrition, what the cakes are genuinely made of, and why home versions never taste the same. Prices for the rest of the board are on our McDonald's breakfast menu, and serving cut-offs are on breakfast hours.
Three versions sit on the national menu. Our surveyed midpoint starts at $4.49 for the sausage version and runs to $5.99 for the sausage, egg and cheese. Franchisees set their own board, so expect roughly a dollar either side of these figures.

There is a quirk in these numbers worth knowing before you order. The sausage version and the Bacon, Egg & Cheese are both 430 calories. Adding an egg and a slice of cheese while swapping sausage for bacon costs you nothing at all in calories.

Most of the load is in the cakes rather than the filling. Two griddle cakes carry the sugar, dextrose and palm oil that make the sweet-savoury effect work, which is why even the plainest version starts at 430 while a Sausage McMuffin on an English muffin sits at 400 with a bigger patty.

A McGriddle is a breakfast sandwich built between two soft griddle cakes instead of bread, biscuit or muffin. The cakes taste of maple and carry a faint stickiness, which is the whole point of the thing. Everything else — sausage, bacon, folded egg, American cheese — appears elsewhere on the breakfast menu.

The story you will find everywhere is that McDonald's bakes crystallised maple syrup into the cakes. The published ingredient list says otherwise. In order, the cakes contain water, enriched flour, sugar, dextrose, palm oil, then under two percent: brown sugar, baking powder, modified tapioca starch, rice flour, whey powder, salt, natural flavors, buttermilk powder, soybean oil, caramel color and soy lecithin.
Maple appears nowhere on that list. The sweetness is sugar, dextrose and brown sugar; the maple character comes from natural flavouring. McDonald's own wording is careful about this — the cakes are described as having "the sweet taste of maple", not as containing it.
Contains wheat, egg, milk and soy. Cooked on shared surfaces, so cross contact is possible. Full ingredient detail on McDonald's own product page.
You can make something close, but not the same, and the ingredient list explains why. Home recipes reach for real maple syrup, which behaves differently from the sugar-and-dextrose blend McDonald's uses. Real syrup is mostly water, so it soaks into a pancake and makes it soggy. Dry sugars stay put, hold structure and give that faint stickiness without wetting the cake.
| WHAT PEOPLE TRY | WORKS? | WHY | FIX |
|---|---|---|---|
Real maple syrup in the batterThe most common homemade approach | No | Too wet | Use maple sugar |
Maple sugar or maple flavouringDry, not liquid | Yes | Closest match | Add brown sugar too |
A dedicated pan or ring mouldFor the round shape | Yes | Shape only | Any 4in egg ring |

Ordinary pancakes as breadNo maple in the cake at all | No | Missing the point | Sweeten the batter |
The most searched comparison on the breakfast menu, and it comes down to sweet against savoury. The McGriddle is heavier, sweeter and pricier. The McMuffin is lighter, cheaper and plainer. Neither is a health food, but the gap is bigger than most people expect.

Both come up constantly in searches and neither is on the national menu. A chicken version has run as a regional test in a handful of markets, and a steak, egg and cheese build appears in some regions on a rotating basis. Some restaurants will substitute a chicken patty if you ask, but it is not a listed item and most will decline.
A breakfast sandwich built between two soft, maple-flavoured griddle cakes instead of bread, biscuit or an English muffin. The filling is sausage or bacon with optional folded egg and American cheese. It is the only sandwich on the McDonald's breakfast menu that uses griddle cakes.
430 for the sausage version and 430 for the Bacon, Egg & Cheese. The Sausage, Egg & Cheese is 550. Those are McDonald's published figures, and the fact that two of them match exactly is not a typo.
$4.49 for the sausage version, $5.79 for Bacon, Egg & Cheese and $5.99 for Sausage, Egg & Cheese at the national midpoint. If you have seen $7.78, that is a delivery-app price rather than the counter board.
No. The published ingredient list for the griddle cakes contains sugar, dextrose, brown sugar and natural flavors. Maple appears nowhere on it. McDonald's describes the cakes as having "the sweet taste of maple", which is careful wording rather than a claim that maple is in them.
Sausage, Egg & Cheese at 20g, but Bacon, Egg & Cheese is the smarter order at 19g for only 430 calories against 550. Sausage-only gives you just 11g for the same 430 calories as the bacon version.
The key is using dry sweeteners rather than liquid. Real maple syrup in the batter makes the cakes soggy because it is mostly water. Maple sugar, or maple extract plus brown sugar, gets far closer to the texture. A four-inch egg ring gives you the shape; a dedicated pan is not necessary.
It is sweeter, heavier and more expensive. The Egg McMuffin is 310 calories against 430 and $4.29 against $4.49. The Sausage McMuffin is $2.89 and on the Under $3 Menu. On price the McMuffins win outright.
Not on the national menu. A chicken version has run as a regional test in a small number of markets and is not a listed item nationwide. Some restaurants will substitute a chicken patty if you ask, but most will decline.
No. It is breakfast only, and most restaurants stop serving between 10:30am and 11:00am. All Day Breakfast ran from 2015 to 2020 and has not returned nationally. Times are on our breakfast hours page.
No. The $4 deal covers the Sausage McMuffin and Sausage Biscuit only. No version appears on the Under $3 Menu either. A meal with hash browns and coffee runs $7.99 to $9.29.

Priya has tracked fast food pricing since 2019. Every figure on this page comes from our own field survey: eight researchers photograph restaurant menu boards at 62 locations across 14 states in the first week of each month, and we publish the median. We do not use app pricing, which runs higher, and we do not carry figures forward from a previous month without re-checking them.
