What actually happens is a mandatory heat treatment cycle that pasteurises the mix inside the machine, runs for around four hours, and cannot be interrupted. It is usually scheduled overnight, but if it starts late or fails partway it locks the machine out through the morning.
That is why the answer is almost always the same: try later, or try a different restaurant. It also means every soft serve item goes down together. If McFlurry is unavailable, so are cones, sundaes and all four shakes, because they come from the same machine. Apple pie and cookies are unaffected.
