The Sausage McMuffin costs $2.89 and carries 400 calories. It is the cheapest hot breakfast sandwich McDonald's sells, and one of only five items on the Under $3 Menu.
A Sausage McMuffin contains 400 calories, 14g of protein and 26g of fat, and costs $2.89 at the national midpoint. It is an official Under $3 Menu item, which the Egg McMuffin is not.
McDonald's built this sandwich in the late 1970s as a cheaper alternative to the Egg McMuffin, and that is still exactly what it is: the same toasted English muffin and American cheese, a seasoned pork sausage patty instead of Canadian bacon and egg, and $1.40 off the price. This page covers what it costs, the full nutrition, what goes into the patty, and how it compares to the two sandwiches people weigh it against. Prices for every other item are on our McDonald's breakfast menu, and serving cut-offs are on breakfast hours.
Our surveyed national midpoint is $2.89. Because this is an official Under $3 Menu item, McDonald's advertises it below three dollars at participating restaurants, but it does not publish one exact nationwide price. Franchisees set their own board, so the real spread runs from about $2.39 to $3.49.

A Sausage McMuffin is 400 calories. That figure is unusually consistent: McDonald's and every major nutrition database agree on it, which is not true of most items on this menu. Where sources do differ is protein, with a few listing 18g against the more widely published 14g.

Because there is no egg, cholesterol drops to 45mg against 250mg. If you are watching dietary cholesterol rather than calories or fat, this is the lighter of the two McMuffins by a wide margin, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
Three things. A toasted English muffin brushed with real butter, a seasoned pork sausage patty cooked on the flat-top griddle, and a slice of American cheese. No egg, no sauce, no condiments of any kind.

The patty is seasoned with rubbed sage, cracked black pepper, marjoram and rosemary, which is a classic American breakfast sausage profile rather than anything McDonald's invented. It is griddled hot rather than deep fried, and the rendered fat soaks into the muffin underneath. That is why the sandwich tastes richer than the ingredient list suggests, and why it carries 26g of fat against the Egg McMuffin's 13g.
McDonald's added this sandwich in the late 1970s, several years after Herb Peterson created the Egg McMuffin in 1972. The brief was a cheaper version that used the same muffin and the same cheese, which is exactly what it still is.
Contains wheat, milk and soy. Cooked on shared surfaces, so cross contact is possible. Full ingredient and allergen detail on McDonald's own product page.
Three sandwiches, three different jobs. One is the cheapest hot breakfast McDonald's sells, one is the lightest, and one is the richest. The Sausage McMuffin sits at the value end.

400 calories, with 14g of protein, 26g of fat and 29g of carbohydrate. That figure is consistent across McDonald's own data and every major nutrition database, which is unusual on this menu.
$2.89 at the national midpoint. It is an official Under $3 Menu item, so participating restaurants price it below three dollars, but franchisees set their own board and the real spread runs from about $2.39 to $3.49.
Yes. It is one of five breakfast items on it, alongside the Sausage Biscuit, Sausage Burrito, Hash Browns and a medium Premium Roast Coffee. The Egg McMuffin is not on that list.
A toasted English muffin brushed with real butter, a seasoned pork sausage patty and a slice of American cheese. No egg and no condiments of any kind. The patty is seasoned with sage, rosemary, marjoram and black pepper.
Depends what you are optimising for. This one is $1.40 cheaper and on the Under $3 Menu. The Egg McMuffin is 90 calories lighter, has half the saturated fat and 3g more protein. On cholesterol the sausage version wins easily at 45mg against 250mg.
14g, which is 28% of the daily value. That works out at 3.5g per 100 calories, well below the Egg McMuffin's 5.5g. A few sources list 18g, but 14g is the more widely published figure.
A round fresh-cracked egg, which adds 80 calories, 6g of protein and 245mg of cholesterol, and takes the price to $4.89. They are listed as two separate menu items rather than one with a modifier, though you can also add the egg yourself at the kiosk for around $2.00.
The muffin is roughly 60 calories lighter and has 3g more protein. The biscuit is 40 cents cheaper and richer. Both sit on the Under $3 Menu and both qualify for the $4 Breakfast Meal Deal.
No. All Day Breakfast ran from October 2015 to March 2020 and has not returned nationally. Most restaurants stop breakfast between 10:30am and 11:00am. Times are on our breakfast hours page.
It carries 10g of saturated fat, which is half the recommended daily maximum, and 760mg of sodium. The cholesterol is low at 45mg because there is no egg. If calories and saturated fat are the concern, the Egg McMuffin is the lighter choice despite containing an egg.
Prices shown are based on typical U.S. McDonald’s menu prices as of August 2026 and may vary by location. Check your local restaurant or McDonald’s app for the latest prices.

Priya has tracked fast food pricing since 2019. Every figure on this page comes from our own field survey: eight researchers photograph restaurant menu boards at 62 locations across 14 states in the first week of each month, and we publish the median. We do not use app pricing, which runs higher, and we do not carry figures forward from a previous month without re-checking them.
