Updated 29 August 2026 Limited time in the US Verified by our pricing team

Table of Contents

The Big Arch burger is two quarter-pound beef patties, three slices of white cheddar, onions two ways, lettuce, pickles and Big Arch sauce, at 1,020 calories. It launched in the US on 3 March 2026 as a limited-time item and is permanent in the UK and Ireland.

This is the biggest burger McDonald's has ever sold: 14 ounces against a Big Mac's 3.5 ounces of beef. It arrived after two years of testing in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Portugal, France and Switzerland, where it did well enough to earn a permanent slot on several boards. This page covers what the Big Arch burger costs by state, the full nutrition, how it compares to the Big Mac, what reviewers actually said, and the availability question that matters most. The rest of the range is on our McDonald's burgers menu, and the full board is on the McDonald's menu with prices.

What is the Big Arch burger?

The biggest burger McDonald's has ever put on a menu. Two quarter-pound beef patties, three slices of white cheddar, onions prepared two different ways, lettuce, pickles and a new Big Arch sauce, on a bun topped with both sesame and poppy seeds. Fourteen ounces in total.

The onions are the interesting part. Crispy fried onions and raw slivered onions on the same burger is not something McDonald's does anywhere else on the US menu. It is a texture decision borrowed from the premium burger chains, and it is a large part of why the Big Arch burger reads as a different tier of product rather than a bigger Big Mac.

Where it came from

McDonald's tested it across Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Portugal, France and Switzerland from 2024 onward. It performed well enough to become a permanent item in the UK and Ireland before the US ever saw it. The company said it was answering demand for a heartier, more satisfying burger, which in practice means competing with the bigger builds at Burger King and Wendy's.

Is the Big Arch burger still available?

This is the question most people arrive with, and the honest answer is that it depends where you are. The Big Arch burger was never a permanent US menu item. It launched on 3 March 2026 as a limited-time offer, and by late April reports were describing it as fading from US boards.

McDonald's said a strong US sales run could earn the Big Arch burger a permanent slot, as happened in the UK, but the company never committed to it. Because franchisees decide what to stock, one branch may still carry it while the next stopped weeks ago. The national McDonald's website is not a reliable guide to what your local restaurant has.

Big Arch burger price by state

McDonald's never set a national price. A March 2026 survey of restaurants across all fifty states recorded a spread from $7.46 to $12.99, which is one of the widest gaps ever measured on a single McDonald's item.

$7.46 in one city and $12.99 in another is a 74 percent gap. Franchisees set their own prices, and premium limited-time items show the widest variance because there is no established expectation anchoring them. If your local price looks high, a branch twenty minutes away may be a dollar or two cheaper. Big Arch burger calories and nutrition

1,020 calories, which puts it among the heaviest single items McDonald's has ever sold. Only the Big Breakfast with Hotcakes at 1,340 goes higher. The protein figure is the redeeming number: the extra beef more than doubles what a Big Mac gives you.

Same beef as a Double Quarter Pounder, 280 more calories. Both carry 8oz of beef, but the Big Arch burger adds a third cheese slice, crispy onions and a heavier sauce application. If you want the beef without the extras, the Double Quarter Pounder does it for 740 calories and often less money. Every item's figures are on our McDonald's calorie list.

Contains wheat, milk, egg, soy and sesame. The crispy onions add wheat beyond the bun, so it is not suitable for gluten free diets by any modification. Full detail on McDonald's own product page.

Big Arch burger vs Big Mac

The comparison everyone makes, and the differences run deeper than size. These are two different builds with different design logic, not one burger scaled up.

Dropping the middle bun is the real design change. The Big Mac's club bun exists to stop sauce and lettuce sliding off a double burger. With patties this thick, the Big Arch burger doesn't need it — the beef itself provides the structure. That is why it eats like a different category of burger rather than a larger Big Mac.

Which should you order?

If you want the Big Mac flavour, order a Big Mac. The Big Arch sauce is tangier and the white cheddar is sharper, so the two do not taste alike despite the family resemblance. If you want volume and protein, the Big Arch burger delivers roughly double the beef for $2.50 more, which is decent value on a weight basis even at 1,020 calories.

Big Arch burger review: what people actually said

Reception was mixed rather than glowing, and it is worth reading the criticism as well as the praise before deciding. Three complaints came up repeatedly: the price, the mess, and the sauce.

"It was the messiest burger I've ever had," though the same reviewer called it "decent" overall. Widely reported social media reaction, March 2026
"It's all a rip-off," was a common response to the pricing announcement, particularly in states where the burger landed above ten dollars. Reader reaction reported by Fox News, 2026

The launch is best remembered for the CEO's promotional clip. Chris Kempczinski posted a video taking a notably small bite of the burger and calling it "a product," which was widely mocked online and arguably got more attention than the burger itself. He later addressed it in a Wall Street Journal interview.

Big Arch Burger FAQ

What is the Big Arch burger?

McDonald's biggest burger ever: two quarter-pound beef patties, three slices of white cheddar, crispy and raw onions, lettuce, pickles and Big Arch sauce on a sesame and poppy seed bun. Fourteen ounces in total, at 1,020 calories.

Is the Big Arch burger still available?

In the UK and Ireland, yes — it is a permanent menu item there. In the US it launched on 3 March 2026 as a limited-time offer and was never made permanent, with reports by late April describing it as leaving some boards. Check the app with your restaurant selected.

How much is the Big Arch burger?

Around $8.99 at the national midpoint, but the spread is enormous. A March 2026 survey found $7.46 in Columbia, South Carolina and $12.99 in Lewiston, Maine. Oklahoma averaged the cheapest state at $8.05, Alaska the highest at $10.32.

How many calories are in a Big Arch burger?

1,020 calories with roughly 52g of protein. Only the Big Breakfast with Hotcakes at 1,340 goes higher among single McDonald's items. The meal with fries and a drink comes to about 1,550.

What is on the Big Arch burger?

Two 4oz beef patties, three white cheddar slices, crispy fried onions, raw slivered onions, shredded lettuce, pickles and Big Arch sauce, between two pieces of a toasted sesame and poppy seed bun. There is no middle bun.

Big Arch burger vs Big Mac: which is bigger?

The Big Arch, by a wide margin. It uses two 4oz patties against the Big Mac's two 1.6oz ones — two and a half times the beef — plus two extra cheese slices. It is 1,020 calories against 590.

Is Big Arch sauce the same as Big Mac sauce?

No. Big Arch sauce is a separate, tangier recipe developed for this burger. It was the most divisive element in reviews, with some preferring it and others finding it a poor substitute for the original.

Was the Big Arch burger any good?

Reviews were mixed. The size, the crispy onions and the white cheddar drew consistent praise. The recurring complaints were that it falls apart under its own weight, that the sauce divides opinion, and that the price felt steep in states where it passed $10.

Where was it available before the US?

Canada from 2024, then the UK, Ireland, Germany, Portugal, France and Switzerland. It performed well enough to become permanent in the UK and Ireland before McDonald's brought it to American restaurants. Prices in every market we track are on our international menu page.

Is it gluten free?

No, and there is no modification that makes it so. The crispy onions contain wheat on top of the bun, so removing the bun is not enough. It also contains milk, egg, soy and sesame.

Prices shown are based on typical U.S. McDonald’s menu prices as of August 2026 and may vary by location. Check your local restaurant or McDonald’s app for the latest prices.
